Biography

Yeray Santana-Falcón is Distinguished Researcher at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC), where he is a member of the Biological Oceanography Group (GOB) within the Institute of Oceanography and Global Change (IOCAG). His research focuses on extreme, non-linear and abrupt changes in the ocean impacting marine organisms and biogeochemistry, the role of mesoscale features in shaping plankton community structure, marine biogeochemistry prediction, etc. He earned his Ph. D. in Oceanography from ULPGC in 2017. Following his doctoral studies, he joined the MEOM group (https://meom-group.github.io) at the University of Grenoble (France), as a postdoctoral researcher in biogeochemical ocean data assimilation. In 2020, he moved to Météo France in Toulouse (France), where he continued his postdoctoral work at CNRM (https://www.umr-cnrm.fr), focusing on abrupt and extreme oceanic events as simulated by CMIP6 Earth System models. Since 2022, he has been promoted to “Chercheur Confirmé”, a high-level researcher position, before returning to ULPGC in November 2024.
